Since the 6th of October 2013 Isabella d'Este (1474-1539) has made headlines in the news, because the art historian Carlos Pedretti made the claim that this portrait of Isabella d'Este was made "without doubt" by Leonardo da Vinci. Unfortunately he is wrong since it was definitely NOT made by him. There are two main reasons: Reason 1: The cleavage of Isabella d'Este in this painting is covered to some extent. Because of this style of fashion we can date this work. Covering-up of the cleavages of the ladies in the Italian Renaissance started after 1530. They were consequences of the Counter-reformation. Hence the painting was made after that date. Leonardo da Vinci had already died in 1519! Reason 2: In this portrait painting Isabella d'Este is lending her face to the Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the main Saint of the Milanese dynasties of the Visconti and Sforza. But Isabella d'Este was NOT a Sforza and did NOT marry into the family of the Sforza. She was a member of the Este and married into the family of the Gonzaga of Mantua! Leonardo da Vinci was one of the main court painters of the Sforza. He would have never made such a mistake. In her lifetime like all women of the Italian high nobility Isabella d'Este was lending her face to the Virgin, the Saint Mary Magdalen and to less important ones like the Saint Dorothy and to the main Saint of her family, the Este dynasty, Justina of Padua. This painting was most likely made after the death of Isabella d'Este, because if she had seen it she would have protested very loudly. SHE WAS NOT A SFORZA! By the way, Leonardo da Vinci could not stand Isabella d'Este and her sister Beatrice d'Este, because of their arrogance, recklessness and selfishness.
