Spouse:

Grand Duke Cosimo III. of Tuscany (1642-1723); marriage on 20. June 1661, a very unhappy marriage; in 1674 Marguerite Louise demanded a share in the government of her husband. This being refused, she withdrew to Poggio a Caiano, wrote thence to Cosimo III., saying, “You make the unhappiness in my life, and I make the unhappiness of yours”, and demanded a final separation and permission to return to France. Cosimo III. agreed and she took up her abode at the convent of Montmatre, near Paris.

  1. her son Ferdinand, born on 9. August 1663, deceased on 30./31. October 1713; on 21. November 1688 he was married to Violante Beatrice of Bavaria (1673-1731) per procurationem, who was the youngest child of the Bavarian Elector Ferdinand Maria († 1679); the actual wedding was celebrated in Florence on 19. January 1689; no children
  2. her daughter Anna Maria Ludovica, born on 11. July 1667, deceased on 18. February 1743 (according to the inscription on her grave in San Lorenzo in Florence she died on 12. March 1743); on 5. Juni 1691 she married Elector Johann Wilhelm of the Palatinate (1658-1716); no children
  3. her son Gian Gastone I., Grand Duke of Tuscany, born on 25. May 1672, deceased on 19. July 1737; on 2. July 1697 he married Anna Maria Franziska of Saxony-Lauenburg (1672-1741), the widow of Philipp Wilhelm August (1668-1693), a younger brother of Elector Johann Wilhelm of the Palatinate (1658-1716), and elder daughter of Duke Julius Franz of Saxony-Lauenburg (1641-1689); it was a very unhappy marriage, the couple separated in 1708, they had no children
