Agnese del Maino was the second wife of Filippo Maria Visconti. It was one of the many clandestine marriages of the 15th and 16th centuries. There are two reasons for this claim: 1. the bizarre behaviour of Filippo Maria Visconti after his marriage to Maria of Savoy in 1428 and 2. the name of his eldest daughter: "Bianca Maria Visconti". Reason 1: Filippo Maria Visconti married the Princess Maria of Savoy on 6 October 1428, but he refused to meet her all his life. He made a real fuss about not being seen with her at all. My studies have shown that Filippo Maria Visconti was in a very difficult situation in 1428. In 1425 Venice, Florence, Savoy, Ferrara, Mantua and Montferrat had declared war against him. And in the meantime, in 1428, it looked very bad for him. He had to break the coalition of his enemies. Therefore he agreed to marry a princess of the House of Savoy. But why did he make such a fuss about that new wife? Why did he refuse to meet and see her? There is only one explanation: he was already married to Agnese del Maino, and the only reason for marrying the princess of Savoy was to save himself and his territories. However, bigamy was punishable by death. Therefore it was very important for Filippo Maria Visconti that no one could accuse him of the consummation of his marriage to Maria of Savoy. Without this consummation his marriage to the princess of Savoy was "not yet valid". Reason 2: His daughter Bianca Maria Visconti claimed all her life that she was the legitimate daughter of Filippo Maria Visconti. The question of whether the latter has been a legitimate or an illegitimate daughter of him can easily be answered. For Duke Gian Galeazzo Visconti, the father of Filippo Maria Visconti, has introduced the custom in 1388 that the legitimate male and female child in his dynasty should have as its middle name "Maria" (after the Holy Virgin). Therefore all legitimate children of the Visconti and Sforza bear this specific middle name.
