Anna d'Este (1531-1607), the first child of Ercole II. d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, Reggio and Modena, and his wife Renée of France, and from her father's side a granddaughter of Lucrezia Borgia and from her mother's side a granddaughter of the French King Louis XII. and his wife Anna de Bretagne

Isabella d'Este wrote about her, when Anna was still a little girl, the following: "Signora Anna, who played some pieces on the gravicembalo excellently. She also danced several dances in the most perfect time and with most exquisite grace." (in: Christopher Hare: Men and Women of the Italian Reformation, London 1914, p. 107)

Anna was married to François de Lorraine (1519-1563), Duke of Guise, in September 1548, with whom she had the following seven children: 1. Henry I. (1549-1588), the future Duke of Guise; 2. Catherine (1552-1596); 3. Charles (1554-1611), the future Duke of Mayenne; 4. Louis II. (1555-1588), the future Cardinal and Archbishop of Reims; 5. Antoine (1557-1560); 6. François (1559-1573) and 7. Maximilien (1562-1567). After the death of her first husband she married Jacques (1531-1585), Duke of Nemours, in 1566, with whom she had the further three children: her son Charles Emmanuel (1567-1595), the future Duke of Nemours; her daughter Marguerite (1569-1572) and her son Henry I. (1572-1632), who followed his elder brother Charles Emmanuel as the next Duke of Nemours.
